Mongolia: Cracks in the Eternal Blue Sky: A Journey
I got some time to read it at last, and the discovery was beyond what I could expect. After each chapter, I had to re-order my personal favorites among all the incredible situations you depict. Of course the stories of lending to family and friends towards grossly uneconomical projects, all the considerations of the crazy traffic situation due to the fact that most cars are second hand Prius from right hand steering Japanese origin, with impossible parking lot consequences, or the surrealistic airport organization, as well as the domination of Korean Air in the airlines playing field - don't ask why - were all highly entertaining. The chapters dedicated to your discovery of the Mongolian outback, thanks in part to your intrepid and qualified driver, also give high interest to your book.

Brutally honest, but also sincere, and with a good sense of humour.

It's difficult to know where to start in reviewing this book so let's start with the well-deserved 5-star rating. This is one of the most honest, forthright books I have ever read on how corruption in businesses and government works. It could serve as a manual for anyone in an influential position in a developing nation who wants to know how to extract the maximum amount of personal gain from that position.

This book is so clearly and honestly written, it flows from page to page. It tells a true story of Mongolia, beyond the cliches and preconceptions of the country; and into the machinations of interconnected politicians, businessmen and banks that hold the country back.Reviewed by Murray on Goodreads on November 27, 2022
Erik's unique mix of tongue-in-cheek humour, obsessive research and deep understanding of cultural differences, makes for a very readable and informative book. The book makes you sad for Mongolia, until the final chapters when hope glimmers through the pages.

I have just finished Erik’s book. It is fascinating and covers a number of countries that we have lived and worked in. The section on Indonesia reports many of the experiences that we had when living there so was especially interesting. I had visited Seoul a few times and worked with a Korean construction company so that was also interesting - I visited the Demilitarised Zone ( DMZ) between South and North Korea but never crossed over into the North itself. The brief section on Sri Lanka was especially interesting as I was dealing with the Government on a daily basis. The section on Ukraine was eye opening. Whilst the Russian invasion was terrible I had not realised how corrupt the country had been. I will go on line to find Erik’s first book on Mongolia. His writing is a good read.
